Alocasia Characteristics

The Alocasia, a member of the Arum family, is a spectacular plant native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. The plant is known for its enormous leaves, which can grow up to one meter in size—hence its nickname, Elephant Ear. Its thick stems, which grow directly from the rhizome, are a distinctive feature. There are countless varieties: some have striking white veins, while others have stems with a zebra-like pattern or a metallic sheen. It is a dynamic plant; the leaves turn toward the light and can “sweat” (guttation), causing droplets of water to fall from the tips of the leaves.

Is the Elephant Ear poisonous?

Yes, the Alocasia is toxic to both humans and pets. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which are present in the tissues in the form of tiny needles. Chewing on the leaves or stems causes an immediate burning sensation and swelling in the mouth, throat, and esophagus. This can lead to breathing difficulties or vomiting. The sap can also cause skin irritation if it comes into contact with the skin during pruning. Therefore, keep the plant out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children, and preferably wear gloves when caring for or repotting it.

Does the Alocasia purify the air?

The Alocasia is an excellent air purifier. Thanks to the enormous surface area of its leaves, this plant is highly effective at absorbing CO2 and converting it into oxygen. In addition, the Elephant Ear helps remove common toxins from indoor air, such as xylene and toluene. Another major benefit is its ability to regulate humidity; due to its large leaf surface area, the plant evaporates a lot of water, which contributes to a healthier indoor climate. This is especially beneficial in Dutch homes where the air, particularly in winter, is often on the dry side.

Elephant Ear Placement

Indoors, the Elephant Ear requires a very bright spot, but be careful with direct midday sunlight. The large leaves can actually get sunburned if exposed to too much direct light. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is often ideal. Because the plant grows toward the light, it’s advisable to rotate the plant a quarter turn regularly to prevent it from growing crooked. Also, keep the Alocasia away from drafts and don’t place it directly next to a working radiator, as the dry air can quickly damage the leaves.

Can the Alocasia be kept outdoors in the Netherlands?

In the Netherlands, the Alocasia can only be kept outdoors during the warm summer months. It is a true tropical plant that does not tolerate temperatures below 15 degrees. You can place it on a sheltered patio or balcony starting in June, provided the nights are warm enough. Be sure, however, that it isn’t exposed to strong winds outdoors; due to the large leaf surface area, the stems catch a lot of wind and can snap. As soon as the temperature drops again in late August or September, the plant must be brought back indoors immediately to overwinter.

Alocasia Care

Caring for the Alocasia requires a bit of a “green thumb.” It’s a plant that thrives in a consistent environment. In addition to light, humidity is the most important factor; mist the leaves at least once a week with lime-free water. This keeps the leaves glossy and prevents dust buildup and spider mites. Do you notice that the plant is producing a new leaf? If so, an older, lower leaf may start to droop or turn brown. This is a natural process in which the plant redistributes energy to the new growth.

Watering Alocasia

The Alocasia is a thirsty plant that prefers soil that remains slightly moist at all times. In the summer, during the growing season, you’ll need to water it more often than in the winter. Be careful, however, not to let water pool at the bottom of the pot; the rhizome is very susceptible to root rot. A helpful tip: it’s better to water it several times with small amounts rather than giving it a large amount all at once. Preferably use lukewarm water, as cold tap water can shock the tropical roots and slow down growth.

Fertilizing the Elephant Ear

Because the Elephant Ear produces very large leaves in a short period of time, it consumes a lot of energy. During the growing season (March through September), it’s essential to add liquid plant fertilizer to the watering water every two weeks. Use the recommended dosage for green houseplants. In the fall and winter, when the plant goes dormant and receives less light, stop fertilizing entirely. Too much fertilizer during the winter months can burn the roots because the plant cannot process the nutrients at that time.

How should you prune an Alocasia?

Pruning an Alocasia is simple and is mainly done to keep the plant neat. It’s best to cut away old, unsightly, or browned leaves. Cut the stem about 3 to 5 centimeters above the base (the tuber) with a clean, sharp knife. The rest of the stem will dry out on its own and can be easily removed later. Because cutting the stem releases sap that can be irritating to the skin, we recommend wearing gloves or washing your hands thoroughly immediately afterward.

What to do if your Elephant Ear has limp or brown leaves?

Limp leaves can indicate either too much or too little water. Check the soil: is it bone-dry or soaking wet?

  • Brown edges: This is often a sign of air that’s too dry or water that’s too hard. Increase the humidity by misting the plant.
  • Yellow leaves: This usually indicates overwatering or a lack of nutrients.
  • Drooping leaves: If the entire plant is drooping, it likely needs more light or water.
  • Keep in mind that it’s normal for the bottom leaf to die off when a new one appears at the top.

My Alocasia is getting too big; what should I do?

When your Alocasia outgrows its space, you can’t “prune” it back like you would a shrub. The best option is to repot the plant into a larger pot so it remains stable. Would you rather make the plant smaller? Then you can “divide” the plant while repotting. To do this, carefully separate the various rhizomes or tubers and plant them in separate pots. This way, you maintain the desired size and immediately have a new plant to give as a gift!

Alocasia Diseases

Unfortunately, due to its need for humid air, the Alocasia is susceptible to spider mites. These are tiny mites that spin webs on the underside of the leaves and suck the sap from the plant. This often occurs in the winter when the heat is on. Scale insects can also appear on the sturdy stems.

  • Inspection: Check the underside of the leaves weekly.
  • Treatment: Do you see any pests? If so, treat the plant immediately with a mixture of soapy water and rubbing alcohol or an organic pesticide. Regular spraying helps prevent most pests.

Alocasia Cuttings

Propagating an Alocasia isn’t done using a leaf, but rather through the tubers or runners. When repotting, you’ll notice small “baby tubers” in the soil or small plants sprouting next to the mother plant. You can carefully separate these from the main root. Make sure the cutting has its own roots. Place the young cuttings in a small pot with slightly moist potting soil or in a layer of water (hydroponics). Keep the cuttings warm and in a bright spot, but avoid direct sunlight until they’re well-rooted.

Repotting Elephant Ear

It’s best to repot the Elephant Ear every two years in the spring. Use a pot that’s at least 20% larger than the current one. Because the plant can become top-heavy due to its large leaves, a heavy stone or ceramic pot is recommended to prevent it from tipping over. Use a well-aerated potting mix, possibly mixed with perlite or bark, so that excess water can drain away properly. Repotting not only gives the plant more space but also provides an immediate fresh supply of nutrients for a new growing season.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alocasia

Why is water dripping from the leaves of my Alocasia?

This process is called guttation. The plant secretes excess water through the tips of its leaves. This often happens after watering or when humidity is high. Be careful with delicate floors!

My Alocasia loses all its leaves in the winter—is it dead?

Not necessarily. Some Alocasias go into a deep winter dormancy and shed their leaves. As long as the tuber is still firm in the soil, the plant will sprout again in the spring when there’s more light and warmth.

How much light does an Elephant Ear need at a minimum?

The plant needs plenty of indirect light to grow. In a spot that’s too dark, the stems will become very long and limp (they’ll “reach” for light) and the leaves may eventually snap.

How tall can an Alocasia grow in the living room?

This depends on the variety. Some dwarf varieties remain small, but larger varieties like the ‘Wentii’ can easily reach 1.5 to 2 meters tall in the living room with proper care.
