Sansevieria Characteristics

The Sansevieria, better known in the Netherlands as the Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, is one of the hardiest houseplants in existence. This powerhouse is native to the arid regions of Africa and Asia. The plant is characterized by its stiff, sword-shaped leaves that grow straight up from the ground. The leaves are often beautifully marked with marbled patterns in various shades of green, yellow, and silver-gray. A unique feature is their leathery texture; the leaves store water, allowing the plant to go extremely long periods without water. It’s a slow-growing plant that can last for decades in your living room.

Is Sansevieria toxic?

It’s important to know that Sansevieria is mildly toxic. The leaves contain saponins, substances that can cause irritation to the mouth, tongue, and gastrointestinal tract if ingested. The risk is low for adults, but for small children and pets (such as dogs and cats), nibbling on the leaves can lead to nausea, vomiting, or drooling. Although the Snake Plant is not deadly, to be on the safe side, you should place the plant where pets and curious little hands can’t reach it.

Does the Sansevieria purify the air?

The Sansevieria is a true star when it comes to air purification. Unlike most houseplants, the Snake Plant opens its stomata at night. This means that it converts CO2 into oxygen specifically during the night, making it the perfect plant for the bedroom. It also filters harmful substances such as benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air. It helps regulate humidity as well. In short: with a few Sansevierias in your home, you can significantly improve air quality, which contributes to better sleep and concentration.

Sansevieria Placement

The Sansevieria is the least finicky plant when it comes to placement. The Snake Plant thrives in full sun but also survives just fine in a dark corner where other plants would give up. If you place it in a sunny spot, the color of the leaves will often become slightly lighter, and it will grow a bit faster. In the shade, the leaves remain a deeper green. The only things the plant really hates are drafts and cold feet. So indoors, make sure to find a spot where the temperature doesn’t drop below $15^\circ C$.

Can Sansevieria be kept outdoors in the Netherlands?

In the Netherlands, Sansevieria is primarily a houseplant. The plant is not hardy and cannot tolerate frost at all. During the summer months, when nighttime temperatures stay above $15^\circ C$, you can eventually place the Snake Plant outside on the patio or balcony. Just make sure it’s in a sheltered spot where excess rainwater can drain directly out of the pot. Too much water is, in fact, its biggest enemy. As soon as fall arrives and temperatures drop, the plant must be brought back immediately to the warm safety of the living room.

Sansevieria Care

Caring for the Sansevieria is extremely simple: “neglect” it a little, and it’s happy.

  • Light: Anything from shade to full sun is fine.
  • Dusting: Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth so the stomata remain open for air purification.
  • Temperature: Room temperature is ideal. It’s the perfect plant for you if you travel often or are simply forgetful about watering. The Snake Plant has almost no demands on its environment.

Watering Sansevieria

Watering is the only thing that can go wrong with the Sansevieria. The golden rule is: don’t water until the soil has completely dried out. In the summer, this is usually once every two to three weeks. In the winter, the Snake Plant can easily go six to eight weeks without water. Always pour water along the side of the pot and never directly into the center (the rosette) of the plant, as this can cause it to rot. When in doubt: don’t water it. The plant survives drought much better than wet feet.

Feeding Sansevieria

Because the Sansevieria is a slow grower, it requires very little additional fertilizer. You can give the Sansevieria a little liquid plant food once a month in the spring and summer, but use only a quarter of the recommended dosage on the package. In the fall and winter, you must absolutely not fertilize the plant; it is dormant during this time, and the extra minerals can damage the roots. Have you just repotted the plant? Then there’s usually enough fertilizer in the new potting soil to last for the first six months.

How should you prune a Sansevieria?

Pruning is actually never necessary for the health of the Sansevieria. However, if some leaves become too long or unsightly, you can cut them off at the base of the plant with a sharp, clean knife. Note: if you only cut off the tip of a leaf, that leaf will stop growing and develop an unsightly brown scar. It’s therefore better to remove the entire leaf. The plant will eventually produce new shoots from the rhizome to fill in the empty space.

What to do if your Sansevieria has limp or brown leaves?

Is your Snake Plant developing limp, soft, or brown leaves? This is almost always caused by overwatering. The roots begin to rot, causing the leaves to lose their firmness and droop.

  • Soft leaves: Remove the plant from the pot, trim away the rotten roots, and repot it in dry soil.
  • Brown spots: This may indicate leaf burn from direct sunlight after being kept in a dark spot, or fungus caused by excessive moisture. Make sure the pot always has drainage holes at the bottom so excess water can drain away.

My Sansevieria is getting too big; what should I do?

If the Sansevieria is bursting out of the pot, it’s time to take action. Because the plant produces offshoots (rhizomes), it can eventually even cause a plastic nursery pot to split. The best solution is to “divide” the plant. Remove it from the pot and cut through the rhizomes so that you end up with several smaller plants. You can pot these separately. This way, you’ll immediately have new plants to give away or place elsewhere in your home. You can also slow its growth by moving it to a darker spot.

Sansevieria Diseases

The Sansevieria almost never suffers from diseases or pests. The only real threat is root rot caused by overwatering. In rare cases, mealybugs may appear among the leaves; they’re recognizable by white, sticky fuzz. You can easily remove these with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol or an organic spray. Because the leaves are so stiff, insects like spider mites have little chance of surviving. A healthy, well-drained Snake Plant is one of the hardiest plants you can bring into your home.

Sansevieria Cuttings

Taking a Sansevieria cutting is a fun experiment. You can do this by cutting a leaf into pieces about 5 to 10 centimeters long. Pay close attention to which end is the top and which is the bottom! Place the leaf pieces with the bottom end in a shallow dish of water or directly into the soil. After a few months, roots will grow, and eventually a new small plant will emerge. Note: with variegated varieties (those with yellow edges), a leaf cutting will often result in a completely green plant. Do you want to keep the yellow edge? Then you’ll need to split the plant.

Repotting Sansevieria

Repot the Sansevieria only when absolutely necessary, usually once every three years. The plant prefers to be firmly and snugly packed in its pot; this often stimulates the growth of new shoots. When repotting the Snake Plant, use a well-draining potting mix, such as specialized cactus soil. Choose a sturdy pot (preferably terracotta), as the strong roots can warp plastic pots. Spring is the ideal time to repot, so the plant can start the growing season with extra space and fresh nutrients.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sansevieria

Why are the leaves of my Sansevieria drooping?

This is usually a sign of root rot caused by overwatering. The base of the leaves will become soft. Check the roots and water less frequently.

How much light does a Snake Plant need?

The plant is very adaptable. It grows fastest in plenty of indirect light, but it also thrives in a dark entryway or bathroom with little light.

How often should I water my Sansevieria?

In the summer, once every 2 to 3 weeks is sufficient. In the winter, the plant only needs a small amount of water every 6 to 8 weeks. The soil should always be bone dry before the next watering.

Is the Sansevieria good for the bedroom?

Yes, excellent! Because the plant produces oxygen at night and purifies the air, the Snake Plant is one of the best plants for a healthy sleeping environment.
