Ficus Lyrata Characteristics

The Ficus Lyrata is known for its impressive, leathery leaves shaped like a violin, hence its nickname “Violin Leaf Plant.” This houseplant belongs to the mulberry family and, in the wild in West Africa, grows into a giant tree. Some of its characteristics are:

  • Size: Can easily reach two to three meters in height indoors.
  • Structure: The leaves have striking veins and a wavy edge.
  • Growth habit: Available as a compact shrub, standard tree, or even a branched tree.

It’s a plant full of character that needs time to acclimate, but once it’s settled in, it’s an eye-catcher that you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Is the Ficus Lyrata toxic?

Yes, the Ficus Lyrata is unfortunately toxic to both humans and pets. When the stems or leaves are damaged, a white, milky sap is released. This sap contains substances that irritate the skin and mucous membranes. If your cat or dog nibbles on the leaves, this can lead to vomiting, mouth irritation, and swelling. Caution is also advised around small children. Therefore, always wear gloves when pruning and make sure the plant is placed in a safe spot where pets cannot reach it directly.

Does the Ficus Lyrata purify the air?

Absolutely! The Ficus Lyrata is an excellent air purifier. Thanks to the enormous surface area of its leaves, the plant can convert large amounts of $CO_{2}$ into oxygen. It also filters harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene from the air. This contributes to a healthier indoor environment in your living room or office. For optimal results, it’s important to keep the leaves free of dust; a thick layer of dust blocks the stomata, preventing the plant from “breathing” properly and reducing its ability to purify the air.

Ficus Lyrata Placement

The right placement is crucial for the survival of the Ficus Lyrata. This plant loves light but doesn’t like constant, direct afternoon sun in the summer. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. If the plant doesn’t get enough light, its growth will stagnate and it will drop its leaves. It’s important to know that the Ficus hates drafts and temperature fluctuations. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, it’s best not to move the plant again, as every relocation causes stress and leaf loss.

Can the Ficus Lyrata be kept outdoors in the Netherlands?

In short: no, the Ficus Lyrata cannot be kept outdoors year-round in the Netherlands. It is a tropical plant that cannot withstand temperatures below 15°C. During the warm summer months (June through August), you could place the plant outdoors in partial shade during the day, provided there is no wind. However, the dry outdoor air and the risk of night frost make this a very high-risk situation in the Netherlands. We therefore recommend keeping the Ficus Lyrata exclusively as a houseplant to prevent the plant from suffering irreparable damage due to the cold.

Ficus Lyrata Care

Caring for the Ficus Lyrata requires a consistent approach. Because the plant originates from the tropics, it thrives in high humidity. Mist the leaves at least once a week with a plant sprayer; this prevents brown edges and keeps pests at bay. Rotate the plant a quarter turn regularly so that all sides receive even light and the plant doesn’t grow crooked toward the light source. Remove dead leaves immediately and keep the large leaves clean with a damp cloth for optimal shine and health of your green friend.

Watering the Ficus Lyrata

Watering is the trickiest part of caring for this plant. The Ficus Lyrata likes slightly moist soil but absolutely hates wet feet. Only water when the top two centimeters of potting soil feel dry. In the summer, this is usually once a week; in the winter, once every two weeks. Preferably use water at room temperature so as not to shock the roots. Note: too much water can quickly cause root rot, which often doesn’t become visible until the leaves start falling off en masse. Use a pot with drainage holes!

Feeding the Ficus Lyrata

To keep your Ficus Lyrata strong and healthy, it needs extra fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). Use a liquid plant fertilizer designed for green houseplants. Apply the dosage indicated on the package once every two weeks. In the fall and winter, the plant is dormant and does not need any extra fertilizer; too much fertilizer during this period can even be harmful to the roots because salts accumulate in the soil. Fertilizing helps the plant produce larger and sturdier leaves.

How should you prune a Ficus Lyrata?

Pruning is essential if you want the plant to remain compact or to encourage branching. The best time to do this is in the spring. Use sharp, clean pruning shears and cut off the top or a side branch just above an “eye” (the spot where a leaf attaches to the stem). Note: Pruning releases a toxic milky sap. Immediately dab the cut with a damp cloth or some ash to stop the sap from flowing. By pruning the top, you force the plant to channel its energy into new side shoots.

What should you do if your Ficus Lyrata has limp or brown leaves?

Wilted or brown leaves are often a warning sign. Brown, dry edges usually indicate low humidity or a lack of water. Are the leaves turning yellow and falling off? Then the plant is likely getting too much water or is in a draft. If the leaf is wilted without changing color, the plant is often thirsty. Always check the moisture level deep in the pot first. Adjust your watering schedule and increase humidity by misting the plant more often to limit further damage.

My Ficus Lyrata is getting too big; what should I do?

When the Ficus Lyrata is thriving, it can grow all the way to the ceiling. The best solution is to prune the plant back drastically in the spring. You can saw or cut the trunk to the desired height. Although this may look a bit bare at first, the plant will sprout new branches from below the cut, which will also make it fuller. Is pruning not an option? Then you can try to slow down growth by not repotting the plant into a larger pot, which limits root growth.

Ficus Lyrata Diseases

The Ficus Lyrata is susceptible to spider mites and scale insects, especially if the air indoors is very dry. You can recognize spider mites by fine webs between the leaves, while scale insects appear as brown bumps on the veins. Root rot (caused by overwatering) and powdery mildew (a fungus that causes white spots) can also occur. Check the undersides of the leaves regularly. If you discover pests, you can often control them with a mixture of soapy water and rubbing alcohol or an organic pesticide. Maintaining proper humidity is the best prevention against most pests.

Ficus Lyrata Cuttings

You can propagate Ficus Lyrata using a stem cutting or a leaf cutting, though the former method is more successful. In the spring, cut off a healthy tip measuring about 10–15 cm. Make sure it has at least two leaves. Let the milky sap dry for a moment, then place the cutting in a glass of water in a warm, bright spot. Change the water regularly. As soon as roots a few centimeters long are visible, you can plant the cutting in a pot filled with well-aerated seed and cutting soil. Patience is key here, as rooting can take weeks.

Repotting Ficus Lyrata

Repot the Ficus Lyrata about once every two years, preferably in the spring when the growing season begins. Choose a new pot that is at least 20% larger than the old one. Use high-quality all-purpose potting soil that drains well. Repotting gives the roots room to grow again and provides the plant with fresh nutrients. Handle the root ball carefully to minimize damage. If the plant is too large to repot, you can also simply replace the top layer of potting soil (about 5–10 cm) with fresh soil.

Buying a Ficus Lyrata

Do you want to buy a Ficus Lyrata? Then keep a few important things in mind. Choose a plant with glossy, firm leaves that are well-attached from bottom to top. Avoid plants with brown spots or those that are already dropping leaves while still in the store. At Plants24, we carefully select our growers so that you are guaranteed a healthy plant that’s ready to enhance your home right away. Whether you choose a small shrub or a large tree on a stem, we’ll ensure safe delivery right to your door.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Ficus Lyrata

Why is my Ficus Lyrata dropping its leaves?

This is usually caused by a change in its environment, such as a move, a draft, or a sudden drop in temperature. Overwatering or underwatering can also be the cause. The plant reacts to stress by shedding its leaves.

How often should I dust the leaves?

We recommend doing this once a month. Dust blocks light and suffocates the plant. Use a soft, damp cloth and gently support the leaf with your hand while wiping it down.

Can a Ficus Lyrata be placed in the shade?

No, the Ficus Lyrata does not like shade. In a spot that’s too dark, the leaves will become dull, growth will stop, and the plant will eventually die. A bright spot is essential for a healthy Ficus Lyrata.

Does the Ficus Lyrata grow quickly?

Under the right conditions, it’s a moderate to fast grower. In the spring and summer, you can expect a new leaf every few weeks. In the winter, growth comes to a near standstill.
