Dracaena Characteristics

The Dracaena is one of the most popular houseplants, and for good reason. This plant, native to Africa, is known for its robust appearance and leathery leaves that grow from a sturdy trunk. It owes its name, “dragon plant,” to the red resin that oozes from some varieties, also known as dragon’s blood. It’s a slow grower, making it perfect for people who don’t want to prune it every week. Whether you choose the Marginata with its delicate variegated edges or the broad-leaved Fragrans, you’re bringing a timeless plant into your home that can take a beating.

Is the Dracaena poisonous?

Yes, it’s important to know that the Dracaena is mildly poisonous. Eating the leaves can cause vomiting, drooling, or loss of appetite in pets such as dogs and cats. It’s also wise to keep the plant out of reach of small children. The sap in the leaves can cause irritation to the mucous membranes. Although occasional contact is usually harmless, we recommend that you contact a doctor or veterinarian immediately if large amounts of the plant have been ingested.

Does the Dracaena purify the air?

Absolutely! The dragon tree is a star when it comes to improving your living environment. Research by NASA shows that the Dracaena effectively filters harmful substances such as benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air. These gases are often found in everyday items such as carpets, paint, and cleaning products. The plant absorbs these substances through its leaves and converts them into clean oxygen. This makes the Dracaena not only a delight to the eye but also a functional addition to your bedroom or office for a healthier indoor environment.

Dragon Tree Placement

The Dracaena isn’t particularly demanding, but it does prefer a spot with plenty of indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, causing unsightly yellow or brown spots. A spot a few meters away from an east- or west-facing window is often ideal. In a north-facing room, it can often be placed right in front of the window. Do you have a somewhat dark corner in your home? Don’t worry—the Dracaena will thrive even in a shady spot, though its growth will be considerably slower.

Can the Dracaena be kept outdoors in the Netherlands?

In the Netherlands, the Dracaena is strictly a houseplant. Because the plant originates from tropical and subtropical regions, it cannot tolerate frost at all. As soon as the temperature drops below 10°C, the plant starts to struggle. During the hot summer months (July and August), you could place the Dracaena on a shaded patio during the day, but there’s a high risk of sunburn or damage from unexpected rain showers. Given the Dutch climate, we therefore recommend keeping your Dracaena indoors, where the temperature remains constant.

Dracaena Care

Caring for the Dracaena falls under the “easy” category. It’s the perfect plant for people without a green thumb or a busy schedule. The most important rule for care is: it’s better to give it too little attention than too much. The plant likes a constant temperature and hates drafts. It’s also a good idea to wipe the leaves down occasionally with a damp cloth. This removes dust, allowing the plant to breathe better and helping the leaves retain their beautiful sheen. An occasional misting with a plant sprayer is also greatly appreciated to maintain humidity.

Watering the Dracaena

Watering the Dracaena is a delicate task. The plant actually uses very little water. The golden rule is to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. In the summer, this is usually once every two weeks, while in the winter it can be as infrequent as once every four to six weeks. Always check the soil by inserting your finger deep into the soil; does it still feel moist? If so, wait a little longer. Overwatering is this plant’s biggest enemy and can lead to root rot.

Feeding the Dracaena

During the growing season (spring and summer), you can support the Dracaena with some extra fertilizer. Use standard liquid houseplant fertilizer for this. Once a month is more than enough. Be sure never to use more than the amount indicated on the package; an excess of nutrients can damage the roots. In the fall and winter, when the plant is dormant, you don’t need to fertilize at all. The plant uses very little energy during this time, and the extra minerals would simply accumulate in the soil, which can be harmful.

How should you prune a Dracaena?

Pruning a Dracaena is surprisingly simple and can help keep the plant compact. If a stem gets too long or the leaves start to look less attractive, you can simply saw or cut off the top with sharp pruning shears. It’s best to do this in the spring. Over time, new shoots will sprout from the cut site. You can cover the “wound” on the stem with a little candle wax to prevent it from drying out, but the plant often recovers just fine on its own.

What should you do if a Dracaena has wilted or brown leaves?

Brown leaves or wilted tips are often a sign of an imbalance in watering. Brown tips on the leaves usually indicate low humidity or too much water at once. If the leaves are drooping and the stem feels soft, it’s almost certainly root rot caused by overwatering. In that case, check the roots; are they black and slimy? If so, you’ll need to repot the plant in dry soil. Yellow leaves that fall off are often part of a natural aging process, as long as new leaves are growing at the top.

My Dracaena is getting too big; what should I do?

If your Dracaena is touching the ceiling, it’s time to take action. You can easily prune the plant by cutting the stem at the desired height. This may sound drastic, but the dragon tree is very resilient. The cut stem will form new shoots below the cut, resulting in a fuller, shorter plant. You don’t need to throw away the top section you cut off. You can often let this section root again in water or directly in the soil, giving you a new plant for free.

Dracaena Diseases

The Dracaena is generally quite resistant to diseases, but it can sometimes be affected by scale insects or spider mites, especially if the air in your home is very dry. You can recognize this by small white webs or sticky spots on the leaves. If you notice this, you can rinse the leaves with a strong stream of water or treat the plant with an organic pesticide. However, prevention is better than cure: by regularly misting the plant with a plant sprayer, you’ll keep pests at bay, since they don’t like a humid environment.

Propagating the Dragon Tree

Want to expand your collection? The Dracaena is easy to propagate using stem cuttings. Cut a healthy section from the plant (about 10–15 cm) and remove the lower leaves to create a bare section of stem. You can plant this cutting directly in a pot with slightly moist potting soil or place it in a glass of water first until roots appear. Place it in a warm spot with plenty of indirect light. After a few weeks, the first roots will form, and you’ll have an official “baby” from your own dragon tree.

Repotting a Dracaena

A Dracaena doesn’t need to be repotted often because it grows slowly and doesn’t like major changes. On average, once every two to three years is sufficient, or when you notice the roots pushing out of the pot. Always choose a new pot that is at least 20% larger than the old one. Use a well-draining potting mix for houseplants. The best time to repot is in the spring; the plant will then have enough energy to recover from the move and will develop new roots more quickly in the fresh soil.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Dracaena

How much light does a Dracaena need?

The Dracaena thrives in plenty of indirect light. It also tolerates a spot in partial shade well, but avoid direct midday sun to prevent leaf burn.

Why are the leaves on my Dracaena turning yellow?

Lower leaves that turn yellow and fall off are often part of the natural process; this is how the plant makes room for new growth. Are the upper leaves turning yellow? Then the plant is likely getting too much light or water.

How tall can a Dracaena grow?

Indoors, a Dracaena can grow between 1 and 2.5 meters tall, depending on the species and the size of the pot. However, you can control its height by pruning it.

Should I fertilize my Dracaena in the winter as well?

No, in the winter the plant is dormant and doesn’t need any extra fertilizer. You can start fertilizing monthly again starting in the spring (March/April).
