What Is a Plant Terrarium?

A plant terrarium is essentially a miniature ecosystem enclosed in a glass jar or bottle. Sealing the jar with a cork or glass lid creates a biological cycle. The water in the bottle evaporates, condenses on the glass, and then drips back into the soil to nourish the roots.

Oxygen and nutrients are also constantly recycled within this closed system. This allows the plants—often tropical species that thrive in high humidity—to survive for months or even years without you having to do a thing.

The Benefits of a Plant Terrarium

Choosing a plant terrarium from Plants24 offers unique benefits for your home:

  • Low-maintenance: Because the system is self-regulating, you almost never have to water it.
  • Humidity: The glass creates a perfect climate for delicate tropical plants that normally struggle to survive in our dry living rooms.
  • Unique design: Each terrarium is a handmade natural wonder and a real eye-catcher on your table or sideboard.
  • Educational: It’s a wonderful way to observe the natural water cycle up close.
  • No green thumb required: Even if you usually let plants wither away, a terrarium often stays alive effortlessly.

What to Look for When Buying a Plant Terrarium?

When purchasing a plant terrarium, the quality of the soil mix is crucial. Make sure the soil is composed of the right layers: activated charcoal to prevent mold, hydro granules for drainage, and the right potting soil. At Plants24, we ensure the ideal balance between these elements. The type of glass is also important; choose clear glass without too much distortion so you can see your plants clearly. Also consider the types of plants in the terrarium; make sure they have similar needs in terms of light and humidity, such as Fittonia or small ferns.

What sizes of plant terrariums are available?

At Plants24, we have terrariums for every spot in your home. We offer compact models, such as the popular “Eierfles” or small canning jars, which fit perfectly on a desk or nightstand. For those who want to make a bigger statement, there are impressive XL bottles or glass “vases” with a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. These larger sizes offer space for multiple plant species and often also for decorative elements like moss and stones. Whether you’re looking for a subtle green accent or a full-fledged jungle under glass, there’s always a size that fits.

Where should I place my plant terrarium?

The location of your plant terrarium determines the success of the ecosystem. The most important rule is: plenty of indirect light, but never direct sunlight. This is because the sun can heat up the glass like a magnifying glass, literally cooking the plants inside. A spot a few meters away from a south-facing window, or right next to a north-facing window, is ideal. Also avoid placing it directly above a radiator, as temperature fluctuations can disrupt the balance inside the bottle. A constant room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees is perfect.

How do I care for my plant terrarium?

Although a terrarium is self-sustaining, it requires a quick check every now and then. Check the condensation: is the jar lightly fogged for half the day? Then the humidity is perfect. Is the glass soaking wet all day? Then remove the cork for a few hours to let it air out. Don’t see any condensation at all? Then add a very small splash of water (50 ml). You can also remove dead leaves from time to time or prune the plants if they’re growing up against the top. This will keep your ecosystem in top condition for years and maintain its clear view.

Frequently Asked Questions About Plant Terrariums

Why does the inside of my glass turn white or fog up?

A light layer of condensation in the morning is a good sign; it means the ecosystem is working. Is the glass actually turning white from limescale? If so, use rainwater or distilled water instead of tap water to refill the terrarium next time.

How often should I water a closed terrarium?

In general, you only need to water a well-sealed terrarium a very small amount 2 to 3 times a year. Always check the soil and condensation before taking action; too much water is more often the culprit than too little.

Mold is growing in my terrarium—what should I do?

Don’t panic! White mold on the soil or on a twig often indicates too much moisture. Remove the cork for a day to let it air out, and carefully remove the affected areas with tweezers or a spoon.

What if my plants get too big for the pot?

You can easily prune the plants. Use a pair of long scissors to trim back the shoots. This will help the plant grow more compactly and prevent the leaves from rotting against the glass due to excessive contact with condensation.
